IEP Binder updates & changelog

A public record of major IEP Binder product changes for parents and caregivers organizing IEP and 504 plan documents, goals, behavior records, school communication, and meeting preparation.

This changelog summarizes user-facing features, privacy and security improvements, and meaningful reliability fixes. Internal refactors, temporary diagnostics, and deployment-only commits are not listed.

September 2026

Simplified student workspace and meeting preparation

  • Reorganized each student binder into five clear areas: Overview, Timeline, Plan, Files, and Binder.
  • Added one + Record workflow for communication, meetings, notes, behavior or incidents, and goal progress.
  • Added a unified chronological Timeline with record-type filters, open follow-ups, search within loaded records, and incremental earlier-record loading.
  • Made structured IEP goals the editable source of truth. New plan snapshots no longer create a second editable free-text goals field, while older snapshot goal text remains visible as historical information.
  • Changed goal progress to factual baseline-to-target measurement and removed automatically inferred On track, Monitor, and Review needed judgments.
  • Goal progress changes now create progress-history records so updates can appear longitudinally in the Timeline and binder.
  • Moved documents into a paginated Files library and changed private file access so a short-lived signed link is created only when a parent selects View / download.
  • Added a concise Meeting Brief PDF for meeting preparation and kept the Full Binder as a separate detailed historical export.
  • Updated binder exports to use structured goal targets and removed duplicate snapshot-goal output.
  • Moved optional private record AI into meeting preparation and document-specific workflows instead of making AI a primary navigation feature.
  • Removed obsolete paid PDF gating from current export paths so the app matches the current free-access product model while preserving legacy subscription management.
  • Updated English and Spanish product language, dashboard copy, README guidance, and homepage structured data around the simpler record → plan → meeting workflow.
  • Audited the live Supabase record tables, row-level security, and indexes. Relevant family-record tables have RLS enabled and the security advisor reported no findings; no speculative database indexes were added.
  • Patched production dependency security findings by upgrading Next.js to 16.3.5, sharp to 0.35.4, and @xmldom/xmldom to 0.9.12, then regenerated the npm lockfile and re-ran the security audit.
  • Restored complete English and Spanish localization across the new Overview, Timeline, Plan, Files, Binder, goal, and + Record workspace flows after the workspace refactor.
  • Fixed linked incident display so encrypted incident narratives, setting, people involved, support tried, outcome, intensity, and duration are decoded for the authorized parent in Timeline and carried into the Meeting Brief instead of being reduced to a generic event.
  • Fixed Timeline earlier-record loading by fetching an extra record to detect additional history and removing the previous 100-record ceiling.
  • Fixed goal progress history so a first measured value of 0 is recorded correctly instead of being mistaken for an unchanged null value.

Goal editing and progress updates

  • Added Update progress and Edit controls to each IEP goal.
  • Parents can update current progress, status, title, area, measurable objective, baseline, target value, and target date.
  • Improved encrypted-field handling so blank encrypted values display correctly instead of appearing as coded text.

Behavior records, communication patterns, and binder analysis

  • Direct behavior and observation entries now save into the Behavior Events record system.
  • Incident reports are linked to Behavior Events while preserving the original encrypted incident report as the source record.
  • Communication patterns now use all saved communication entries rather than only a limited subset.
  • Expanded document preparation for whole-record binder analysis and longitudinal comparison.
  • Improved parent-facing communication record labels and incident detail display.

Private child-record chat and document reliability

  • Restored private child-record chat with evidence restricted to the selected child's approved records.
  • Chat can use prepared documents, communication records, behavior records, goals, and incident/check-in records.
  • Improved PDF text extraction and deployment reliability for uploaded documents.

August 2026

Incident reporting and document explanations

  • Added private incident reporting.
  • Added document explanation support for uploaded records.
  • Improved account recovery, family-data handling, deletion flows, and release safety.
  • Hardened document parsing so PDF processing loads only when needed.

July 2026

Database access-policy hardening

  • Updated Supabase row-level security policies and database access rules to reduce security warnings and keep family records scoped to the correct account.

April 2026

Encryption and private record handling

  • Added AES-256-GCM encryption for sensitive student information.
  • Encrypted communication-log content at rest and decrypted it only for authorized display and processing.
  • Added migration support for existing encrypted student records.
  • Improved AI classification timing so saving a communication entry is not blocked unnecessarily.

IEP goal progress timeline

  • Added the IEP goals timeline with baseline, current progress, target values, target dates, and accessible status indicators.
  • Added parent-friendly helper text for baseline, current, and target progress fields.
  • Removed pricing gates from the then-current public experience and made core features available without tier badges.
